Is Denise “Vanity” Matthews VH1’s Raqi Thunda’s Mom?

Although she has posted photos on Instagram saying she is, NO, VH1’s Raquel “Raqi” Thunda is not Denise “Vanity” Matthews’ daughter. The posts are jokes but she does want to let the RZA and Dallas Jackson know that she’s the girl to fill Vanity’s role of Laura Charles if The Last Dragon is ever remade.

Vanity Raqi Thunder's Mom?

Check out her original instagram post she fooled a lot of people. There is definitely a resemblance to the 80’s beauty. If it was possible I think she could be the love child of Vanity and one of Prince’s other 80’s proteges- Apollonia; of Purple Rain and Apollonia 6 fame. What do you think?

Are Samuel L Jackson & Dallas Jackson holding The Last Dragon Remake Movie Poster in this Picture?

Is this what it appears to be? Dallas Jackson & Samuel L Jackson holding a copy of The Last Dragon Remake Movie Poster?

Dallas Jackson and Samuel L Jackson Holding The Last Dragon Remake Movie Poster

Dallas Jackson and Samuel L Jackson holding what appears to be a copy of The Last Dragon Remake Movie Poster, posted on Dallas’ Facebook account March 2012.

Not sure how this one slipped by us for over a year, but we recently noticed that Dallas Jackson, writer and producer of The Last Dragon remake, has been using this as his Facebook Cover Photo. The pic was uploaded to Dallas’ account March 18, 2012. It is definitely him, that is definitely Sam Jackson but what’s up with that poster?

Sam Jackson, Chris Brown, Rihanna, The RZA & The Last Dragon Remake

You’ll notice at the bottom of the poster are the names Samuel L.  Jackson, Chris Brown and the RZA. The RZA is slated to co-produce, Sam Jackson has been linked to the Sho’nuff role since 2008 and if you follow our remake update page you’ll know that originally Dallas Jackson wanted Chris Brown and Rihanna to star as Bruce Leroy and Laura Charles. Gotta admit it’s still pretty shocking to see Chris’ name on the poster.

Could Rihanna pull off Laura Charles originally played by Denise “Vanity” Matthews

Does this mean The Last Dragon Remake is Happening?

Ultimately whether this remake happens or not will be up to fans. If the fans want it enough and show they will support it Sony would crazy not to green light it.  I read that they were thinking of coinciding the release of the reboot with Motown’s 50th anniversary next year (2014) but who knows how true that rumor is.

The poster was probably designed to create some buzz (which we are happy to help with) so I wouldn’t read to much into it but it does beg the questions -is this just a fan made poster? What’s with the dude holding the sword? is that supposed to Sam as Sho’nuff? are they serious about Chris Brown as Leroy Green?

The Last Dragon 2: The Glow – The Sequel that never happened

Updated April 30, 2013

There may or not be a Last Dragon Remake but the fact that a planned Sequel to The Last Dragon never happened back in the 80’s is much more disappointing to me. After the success of The Last Dragon in 1985 there were plans for a part 2 called “The Glow”. Apparently the script was written in 1986, but sadly it was never made into a movie.

Why didn’t The Last Dragon Sequel Happen in the 80s?

There are conflicting reports and the whole story may never be told.  In a TVOne special (watch it below) The Last Dragon’s producer Rupert Hitzig said  Taimak (Bruce Leroy) held out for a 3 picture deal. In a March 29, 2013  interview with DJ Ms. Drama on Breakthru Radio,  Taimak suggested that the TVOne special was not accurate as it wasn’t that clear cut. He said in the interview that “it was much more complex than that… it has to do with the dynamics of deal making in Hollywood…it wasn’t that I didn’t want to do it, what 19, 20 year old doesn’t want to continue the fun of making movies… let’s just say part of the people involved in the negotiation tried to muscle me rather than explain to me… the approach… made me put my defenses up.”  He also mentioned that Rupert Hitzig didn’t know what happened because he wasn’t in the room during the negotiation. Whatever the reason, the sad truth is that The Last Dragon 2 never happened… 🙁

**December 2015 Update: Taimak opens up for the first time about what actually happened to The Last Dragon Sequel in his autobiography. Only 1,000 copies will be printed they are available from Incorgnito Publishing Press. Listen to him talk about it in this November 6, 2015 interview on the Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club with DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God.

The Last Dragon 2 Script

I read about the script on a forum called TheRFP.com where someone claimed to have a copy of it. I’ve tried to get a hold of him, but haven’t heard back. He didn’t say too much about the plot but he mentioned it centered around Sho-Nuff going back to his master to let him know that he got beat down by Bruce Leroy. Early in the script Leroy goes to Asia to fight Sho’Nuff ‘s master and loses but by the end of the movie he’s able to do old school Kung Fu movie style floating through the air and use the glow to heal himself faster than normal. The sequel is said to have more action and further explain the glow. Its gets more into how great boxers (like Sho’nuff) can get the Glow in their hands. Other great fighters could get the glow in other body parts depending on their specialty for instance a great kicker could get the glow in their feet. Personally I would love to hear the origin of Sho’nuff. Since he just came back on the scene in the original where had he been? How did acquired the power of the hands only red glow.

Sho'nuff's Red Glow - The Last Dragon Tribute Blog

How did Sho’ get that glow? (art: Matt Hennen)

Some of this sounds a little like what Dallas Jackson, the writer of this generation’s Last Dragon Remake, has said about his script. It is said to deal more with the origins of the glow, Leroy, Sho’nuff and Laura Charles.

How I think The Last Dragon Sequel would have ended?

I’m sure in true Kung Fu movie tradition the defeat motivates Leroy to train even harder. He finds some sort of guide or old sage who teaches him more about the history and power of the Glow. This allows him to realize the Glow’s full potential. Of course it would end with an epic battle where Leroy shows the powerful Evil Master of the Red Glow what The Last Dragon can really do.

I would have loved to see this movie… Oh what could have been….

The Producer of The Last Dragon Talks about the planned Sequel

On The TVone “Life After” Special on Taimak, Rupert Hitzig, the producer of The Last Dragon talks about the sequel and how Taimak turned it down.

What do you think the plot of The Last Dragon II should have been about?

The Last Dragon Remake Should it Happen? Who should be Cast?

Shonuff vs Bruce Leroy Who's the Master

Sequels and Remakes of 80’s movies seem to be coming out of the wood work lately. The Karate Kid, Tron, Wall Street, Footloose, Fright Night, The Thing, Conan The Barbarian & Clash of the Titans just to name a few.

There has been talk for years about Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon being remade as well. Samuel L. Jackson has even signed on to play Sho’nuff, and there are rumors of Rihanna filling Denise “Vanity” Matthews role of Laura Charles.

Should The Last Dragon be Remade?

I am starting to think after this long the remake will never happen. I am a little torn. On one side I would love to see this Motown meets Kung Fu movie in the spotlight again. I would be interested to see what a modernized version of this campy classic would look like. The other side is that I am worried they will ruin a classic.  I think it would be almost impossible to capture the original character that made The Last Dragon so special.

Pooch Hall from ‘The Game’ would love to play Bruce Leroy in The Last Dragon Remake.

Who would you cast in The Last Dragon Remake?

I mean who could really match the arrogance & attitude of Julius Carry (RIP) as Sho’nuff? The boyish innocence, charm and martial skill of Taimak’s Bruce Leroy or the subtle flirty sexiness of Vanity’s Laura. Although Samuel L. Jackson’s resume of playing the bad ass mofo makes him a pretty good fit,  no one could really be a meaner, prettier or badder mofo lowdown around than the original Shogun of Harlem – Julius J. Carry III.  Busta Rhymes? Maybe 10 years and 20 lbs ago.  I think Rihanna is a decent choice for Laura. She’s a sexy, pop/r&b star like Vanity was at the time. Some other candidates could be Ciara, Paula Patton, or Alicia Keys. Who could play Bruce Leroy? Pooch has mentioned on Twitter that he would love to play Leroy and work along side Rihanna and Samuel L. Jackson if the remake ever happened.  I think Bobb’e J. Thompson (Role Models, Marcus PSP kid) would make a perfect Richie Green and Ke$ha or Lady Gaga could play Angela.

What do you think?

Will The Last Dragon remake happen? Should it happen? Who would you cast in The Last Dragon Remake? Who would make the best Bruce Leroy Green? Vanity? Sho’nuff? Eddie Arcadian? Angela?
